What We Do
The tagline 'Mavericks who make heads nod and jaws drop' is the core of the identity of Rucksack Records. We work with forward-thinking hip-hop artists and jazz musicians who constantly push themselves—and their listeners—to break new ground. With roots in music journalism, part of the label's aim is to properly share the narrative behind each release through liner notes, artwork, and dedicated PR/music promotion.

Roots in Music Journalism
Rucksack Records is a spiritual successor to The Find Magazine. Both were founded by Danny Veekens, an Amsterdam-based music journalist (OOR, Bandcamp, Tracklib, Wax Poetics, We Jazz Magazine & more) and music curator (kollekt.fm & Sonos Radio). This editorial mindset is also at the core of the record label with liner notes by a who's who of writers. Among them are Dylan Green (Pitchfork, Hearing Things), Nate LeBlanc (DadBodRapPod), Gary Suarez (CABBAGES), John Morrison (NPR, The Wire Magazine & WXPN), Brian Michael Murphy (media archaeologist, essayist, and author), John-Paul Shiver (Treble Zine, Resident Advisor), Nate Patrin (author of 'Bring That Beat Back: How Sampling Built Hip-Hop'), among others.
